Visual Observation
Different electrical tape materials can be identified by their color and surface texture.
- PVC Electrical Tape: Available in bright, vivid colors such as black, red, yellow, and green. The surface is smooth and glossy, with neat edges. It unwinds evenly and resists deformation.
- Cloth Electrical Tape: Usually black or gray, with a distinct fabric texture. It is thicker, with visible fiber layers, giving it a stiffer overall appearance.
- Rubber Electrical Tape: Darker in color with a matte finish. The tape is softer and slightly elastic when stretched.
- Vinyl Electrical Tape: Similar in appearance to PVC tape but with softer, muted colors and a semi-matte finish. It is generally thinner than PVC tape.

Touch & Feel
By rubbing or stretching the tape, you can sense the differences in texture and elasticity.
- PVC Electrical Tape: Smooth to the touch, slightly firm when pressed. It stretches without breaking easily and slowly returns to shape. Adhesion is moderate.
- Cloth Electrical Tape: Rough texture, with strong fiber toughness when stretched. Adhesion is strong, making it suitable for rough surfaces.
- Rubber Electrical Tape: Soft and slightly tacky to the touch, even without peeling off the adhesive layer. It has good elasticity but poor recovery, deforming more easily.
- Vinyl Electrical Tape: Thin and soft to the touch. It tears easily when stretched and has weaker adhesion, making it more suitable for temporary insulation or marking.
Combustion Test
| Material | Combustion State | Smoke & Odor | Residue After Combustion |
|---|---|---|---|
| PVC Electrical Tape | Difficult to ignite; when ignited, the flame is yellow-green and goes out immediately after leaving the fire source | Thick smoke with a pungent odor (similar to plastic burning) | Black hard lumps that cannot be crushed by hand |
| Cloth-based Electrical Tape | Easy to ignite; the flame is orange-yellow and burns quickly | Little smoke with a scorched odor similar to "burning cloth" | Gray ash that crumbles easily when pinched by hand |
| Rubber Electrical Tape | Easy to ignite; the flame flickers and the tape melts and drips while burning | Relatively thick smoke with a special stench of burning rubber | Black sticky residue that hardens after cooling |
| Vinyl Electrical Tape | Easy to ignite; the flame is bright and burns quickly | Little smoke with a mild odor (similar to candle burning) | White or light-colored brittle residue that is easy to crush |
Performance Tests
Electrical tapes can also be distinguished by simple performance checks.
- Insulation: Use tools to measure the insulation resistance after wrapping wires. High-quality PVC and rubber tapes provide excellent insulation. Without tools, you can test by wrapping both poles of a battery-good-quality tape will not cause sparks or leakage.
- Weather Resistance: Stick the tape on a surface and leave it outdoors for 1–2 weeks. PVC and rubber tapes usually resist cracking and delamination, while cloth and vinyl tapes may age and deform.
