Types of Wire Harness Tape

PVC Wire Harness Tape
The full name of PVC tape is “Polyvinyl Chloride Electrical Insulation Pressure Sensitive Adhesive Tape.” Its base material is a soft PVC film, and its adhesive layer mainly consists of natural rubber, acrylic adhesive, synthetic rubber, etc. PVC tape has good properties such as temperature resistance, cold resistance, corrosion resistance, oil stain resistance, and flame retardancy.

Wire Harness Cloth Tape
The commonly used cloth-based tapes include the following types: fiber cloth tape; polyester cloth tape; wool-polyester cloth tape; velvet tape; wool felt tape; electrical insulation waterproof tape; non-adhesive cloth tape, etc. The common color of cloth-based tape is black. The standard sizes for cloth-based tape are usually 20×25, 40×25 and so on, with a typical thickness ranging from 0.25 to 0.8mm.

Sponge Tape
For automotive wiring harnesses, conventional sponge tape is made from high-density flame-retardant sponge as the base material. After technical processing, it is coated with a specially formulated pressure-sensitive adhesive. It features shock absorption, noise reduction, and is easy to tear.
Choose the type of tape.
Depending on the application, certain types of tape can add various useful performance features to cables, like resistance to abrasion, better dielectric insulation, thermal protection, and EMI shielding. The amount of cover, layers, and the accuracy of the installation procedure all depend on the intended application.
Auto Wire Harness Tape: Tape Quantity
Since not all materials and applications are equal in thickness, this is not always an easy tell. More area coverage will require thermal and EMI materials to function well. If you’re wrapping a cable with bends, you’ll need more tape to get the job done. Thus, you will increase the tape length numbers by 1.3, one-third of the length per foot.
Auto Wire Harness Tape: Installation

●The storage conditions of the tape
The room temperature is 20-22 ° C and the humidity is 50% relative humidity. Place the rolls of adhesive tape in the original package at a place 20cm above the ground away from direct light sources (such as lights and sunlight).
●Conditions of use of tape
In order to ensure good adhesion during tape use, the surface of the wrapped object must be clean and dry to ensure that it is free of grease and rags, dust, wax, organic solvents, and typical cleaning agents including esters (e.g., acetone), ketones (e.g., MEK), and Naptha-based products.
The way the tape is wound when used in practice
The close winding of tape in a bundle of wires
In the case of dense winding, 1/2 and 1/4 laminated winding are generally adopted. After a dense winding, the tape on the wire is divided into two layers and one layer respectively. Only in this way can the tape play a good sealing and insulating role on the wire harness, so that the wires inside the wire harness are not easily damaged by the outside world.
Spaced spiral winding
When tape is wrapped, the winding method is the same as that of dense wrapping. The difference with dense wrapping is that the wire is evenly exposed after winding. In general, the distance between the wires is 0.5 to 2.0 tape widths of the actual tape width.
Spacing is not spiral wound
The adhesive tape is not wrapped in spiral mode. After wrapping, the bare wire is exposed and the wrapping is uneven. Under normal circumstances, the distance between adhesive tape and wrapping is 80~200mm.
The use of sponge tape
If the style of the sponge tape is the same as that of the common rolled P, V and C tape, the wrapping method is generally 1/4 laminated. If the sponge tape is a massive sponge strip, fold and paste the two ends in half. After pasting, bind some parts or all parts with P, V and C tape.
No glue P V C, the use of flannelette belt
When this belt is used, it is generally wrapped by folding or curling to ensure that the internal wire is in a loose state and the whole wire is in a soft state. This wrapping method is used when the wire harness is bent at a large Angle or through a narrow gap.

The direction of tape winding is from branch to trunk. The direction and sequence of tape winding is to wrap the branch first and then the trunk.

The tape must be wrapped twice around the harness, the same width as the tape.
Requirement: If the number of coils is defined in the process file, the number of coils is defined by the process file. The wrapping points must cover all the wires (the wires do not leak out of the points), the tape head must be tightly attached, and the position, spacing, and number of wrapping points must meet the requirements of the process documents.
Spacing
When you start wrapping the tape , wrap it from the starting point to the point, then spirally wrap it at about a 45-degree angle along the mark on the harness. Finally, wrap around the ends and tidy up the ends so they are not uneven/shedding. On the basis of the above:
- If the diameter of the wire harness branch is equal to or less than half the width of the tape, the gap is not allowed to be exposed.
- If the diameter of the wire harness strap is not 1/the width of the tape/the spacing between the tapes is greater than the width of the tape itself, it is best to be one-half and the spacing is even. (Varies by industry and OEM standards)
Fully wrapped
The overlap of the wrapped tape should be at least 50% of the tape width, and the beginning and end must be wrapped 2-3 times. No wires are visible in areas where the tape is completely wrapped. The ends of the ropes are neat and not uneven/shedding. Please note that the length of the tape cannot exceed 40 mm.

Cautions Required
- Distinguish tape types, identify specifications, and avoid using them incorrectly.
- Before wrapping the tape, check the connector for missing branches, terminals not in place, damaged connectors, improperly used connectors, loose plug seals, crossed branches, and twisted wires.
- Generally speaking, start with the small branches and wrap the string around the stems. In the entire winding of small branches, the tape cannot be stretched too long, and half-glued and leaking lines are not allowed.
- The tape should be wrapped together and should be strong and have a smooth surface.
- Electric adhesive tapes cannot overlap too much to reduce tape waste and save production time. Gap bends should have even gaps.
- The tape cannot be wrapped around, cannot be applied randomly, and the tape must not be wasted.
- Make reasonable suggestions to improve the current winding method or tape specifications.
- When the tape is used up, you must follow the 5S principle, remove the remaining tape.
The Use of Automotive Wiring Harness Tape
Automobile harness tapes are used for bonding between automobiles and motorcycle signs, home appliances, engineering decoration, and structural bonding of curtain walls.
Adhesion and fixing of automobile trim strips, automotive glass, automobile pedals, sealing strips, wave plates, wheel arcs, block flow, plate brake lights, and interior car plates.
Other automotive wiring harness tape is also suitable for automotive, signage, decoration, building materials, home accessories gift boxes, electronic appliances, medical protection, precision machinery and other industries.
The thickness of automotive wire tape PE is 1mm~20mm. Black, white and gray have excellent adhesion, good retention, chemical resistance, good shock absorption and elastic resilience.
Selection of Automotive Wire Harness Tape
Selection of tape for engine wiring harness and engine compartment wiring harness
Polyester cloth based tape is the preferred tape for engine wiring harnesses. However, due to its high cost, it is recommended to only use it locally on the wiring harness. Secondly, PVC tape with high temperature resistance of 135 ℃ can meet conventional requirements. The wiring harness in the cabin is generally made of PVC tape with a temperature resistance of 105~135 ℃, and special parts are made of flannel tape or polyester cloth based tape.
Selection of tape for instrument panel wiring harness and four door wiring harness
The working environment of the instrument panel wiring harness and the four door wiring harness is relatively stable. Ordinary PVC tape (with high temperature resistance of 85~105 ℃) can be used for wrapping or fixing the wiring harness to meet the requirements. When the wiring harness is too narrow or a clamp is used on the wiring harness, or when there is a large angle of folding in the direction of the wiring harness, non adhesive flannel tape or industrial plastic cloth can be used locally. When the wiring harness is in direct contact with hard materials but cannot be completely fixed locally, Locally use flannel tape, polyester based tape, flannel felt tape, felt tape, and sponge tape for cushioning, shock absorption, sound absorption, and noise reduction treatment.
Selection of adhesive tape for floor wiring harness
The floor wiring harness is placed under the interior of the floor, and the working environment is relatively stable. Its requirements for adhesive tape are not very high. The use of ordinary high-temperature resistant PVC tape of 85 ℃ can fully meet the requirements. When connecting to movable seats, some wear-resistant flannel tape needs to be used for winding at the connection area.
Selection of adhesive tape for ceiling wiring harness, air conditioning wiring harness, and other small wires
When using ordinary PVC tape with high temperature resistance of 85 ℃ or 105 ℃, ordinary sponge tape can meet the requirements for noise reduction.
Selection of ABS wire harness tape
Due to the fact that the ABS system is a safety component and the working environment near its four wheel speed sensors is relatively complex, it is generally reasonable to choose flannel tape or polyester cloth based tape when selecting tape. If the ABS harness is not separated separately, a combination of PVC tape, flannel tape, and polyester cloth based tape can be used.
Selection of safety airbag wiring harness and safety belt wiring harness
The airbag wiring harness and safety belt wiring harness are relatively special components. Generally, the tape used is yellow PVC tape that can withstand high temperatures up to 85 ℃. The markings on the wiring harness can be ordinary white PVC tape.
