Power Must Be Disconnected First

Regardless of the type of electrical tape used, the primary step is to disconnect the power source to the wire and confirm that no current is flowing through it. Failure to do so may result in the following risks:

During operation, hands may come into contact with exposed metal parts, causing electric shock.

During the wrapping process, the tape may shift, exposing metal and creating a potential leakage hazard.

If the wire has a short circuit, wrapping it while energized may exacerbate the fault or even generate sparks.

Conditions Under Which Use Is Permitted After Power Disconnection

If, after power disconnection, only the insulation layer is damaged (with no exposed metal) or insulation is required at a joint, electrical tape may be used according to specifications:

When the outer insulation has a small tear that hasn't damaged the copper core and the power is off, wrap 3-5 layers of PVC electrical tape over the damaged area and an additional 2-3 cm of intact insulation around it.

After disconnecting power, tighten the wire joint securely. Then, starting from the insulation layer, wrap electrical tape using the "half-lap method" to ensure the joint is fully covered with no exposed metal.

Absolutely Prohibited Situations!

Even when power is disconnected, the following situations must not be addressed solely by wrapping with ordinary electrical tape:

  • Exposed and untreated metal wire cores: If the copper core of a wire is broken or exposed, the joint must first be securely spliced and fixed before wrapping with insulating tape. Do not directly wrap exposed metal with tape.
  • High-voltage wires: Standard electrical tape is only suitable for low-voltage circuits (AC below 500V, DC below 1000V) and must not be used on high-voltage wires.
  • Damp or high-temperature environments: Wires in humid areas like bathrooms or kitchens, or near high-temperature equipment, require specialized waterproof and heat-resistant tape. Standard PVC electrical tape is unsuitable.
