What Are the Precautions for Using Melamine Sponge?

Material Compatibility

The following materials are not recommended for use with melamine sponges:

  • High-end leather: For example, genuine leather sofas and luxury brand leather goods. The sponge's strong adsorption may damage the leather coating, causing discoloration and cracking.
  • Precision electronic screens: The coating on phone and computer screens can be scratched by friction, potentially leaving marks.
  • Unglazed ceramics: These materials are porous and fragile; sponge friction may cause fine scratches or allow stains to penetrate.
  • Car paint surfaces: Avoid using on large areas of the car body; suitable only for localized cleaning.
  • Matte surfaces: Such as matte panels on furniture or cars; excessive rubbing may dull the finish.
  • Silverware: Prolonged friction may wear down the plating, leading to oxidation and blackening. Apply a protective agent after cleaning.

Usage Instructions

  • Must be used wet: A dry sponge is hard and has high friction, which can scratch surfaces. Always soak the sponge fully with water, and squeeze out excess water before use.
  • Control pressure while wiping: Use "light pressure and adsorption" instead of "forceful scrubbing." For smooth surfaces like plastic and glass, applying too much force can cause scratches.
  • Designate sponges for different areas: Use separate sponges for the kitchen, bathroom, and furniture to avoid cross-contamination. For example, oil residue from a kitchen sponge could stain furniture.
  • Clean after use: After absorbing dirt, the sponge's pores may clog, reducing its cleaning effectiveness and increasing the risk of bacterial growth. Clean the sponge thoroughly after each use. For heavy use, replace the sponge every 2–3 uses.

Safety Precautions

  • Do not mix with strong acids or alkalis: Melamine sponges work through physical cleaning. Adding strong acids or alkalis may corrode the sponge and release harmful substances.
  • Be cautious with chlorine-based cleaners: Some bleaches contain chlorine, which may chemically react with the sponge, producing irritating odors.
  • Wear gloves when cleaning: Prolonged contact with wet sponges can dry out your skin. When cleaning oil or chemical stains, it is advisable to wear rubber gloves to avoid direct contact.
  • Keep away from children and pets: The soft texture makes the sponge easy to swallow accidentally, and its porous structure may harbor dirt. Store it out of reach after use.
